"Pakistan is a land of great potential resources. But to build it up into a country worthy of the Muslim nation, we shall require every ounce of energy that we possess and I am confident that it will come from all whole-heartedly" (August 15, 1947).
Irrigation Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a government organization with a mandate to plan, develop, manage, operate and maintain different modes of environmentally and socially acceptable Irrigation and Drainage Systems in the province. The province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is endowed with hydraulic civilization, natured by rich irrigation heritage. The Irrigation Department is committed to provide ensured and adequate water for irrigated agriculture for which it resorts to both development of new irrigation (flow/lift) schemes and conservation of flood water through small dams to meet province's requirements for food & fiber. Its ultimate aim is to provide year round irrigation water/facilities and increase the irrigable area of the province through implementation of new scheme and improvement in the existing infrastructure for optimal utilization of our available water resources. In the prevailing scenario, when we are confronted with, uncertain precipitation, Global Warming, Environmental Degradation, population eruption, rapid urbanization of our irrigated lands, depletion in land fertility due to twin menace of salinity and water logging, concerted national efforts are needed by all the stake holders to put the province on the course of sustainable development, prosperity and self reliance. I am confident that the Irrigation Department will tackle all the challenges confronted with it, in a scientific way for judicial, prudent and optimal utilization of our available resources.
